Visualizing curved spacetime
نویسنده
چکیده
I present a way to visualize the concept of curved spacetime. The result is a curved surface with local coordinate systems (Minkowski Systems) living on it, giving the local directions of space and time. Relative to these systems, special relativity holds. The method can be used to visualize gravitational time dilation, the horizon of black holes, and cosmological models. The idea underlying the illustrations is first to specify a field of timelike four-velocities u. Then, at every point, one performs a coordinate transformation to a local Minkowski system comoving with the given four-velocity. In the local system, the sign of the spatial part of the metric is flipped to create a new metric of Euclidean signature. The new positive definite metric, called the absolute metric, can be covariantly related to the original Lorentzian metric. For the special case of a 2-dimensional original metric, the absolute metric may be embedded in 3-dimensional Euclidean space as a curved surface.

Frame-dragging vortexes and tidal tendexes attached to colliding black holes: visualizing the curvature of spacetime.
When one splits spacetime into space plus time, the spacetime curvature (Weyl tensor) gets split into an "electric" part E(jk) that describes tidal gravity and a "magnetic" part B(jk) that describes differential dragging of inertial frames. We introduce tools for visualizing B(jk) (frame-drag vortex lines, their vorticity, and vortexes) and E(jk) (tidal tendex lines, their tendicity, and tendex...

We describe an implementation of a virtual environment for visualizing the geometry of curved spacetime by the display of interactive geodesics. This technique displays the paths of particles under the influence of gravity as described by the general theory of relativity, and is useful in the investigation of solutions to the field equations of that theory. A boom-mounted six degree of freedom ...

A new visualization technique for visualizing three-dimensional symmetric positive definite tensor fields of rank two is described. It supports studying the spatial projection of a spacetime metric. The rendering technique is demonstrated upon the Schwarzschild metric of a static black hole, the Kerr metric of a rotating black hole in two different coordinate systems, and a numerically computed...
